My 14 week old GSD has started to pick up rocks and mouth them. I have not seen him actually swallow one, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. The first thing he does when I take him out is look for rocks...NOT GOOD! He looks at me right before he picks one up, and when I say "NO!", he grabs it and takes off. He is a very healthy dog, and I hate to see him spend his life on a leash...Has anyone else had this situation, and what did you do? Thanks for the help...
John
Had one a little younger than that that picked up this habit in the gravel drive. I just always made sure when he was out that I always provided more interesting toys for him, right from the minute I opened the kennel door. The interest disappeared after teething was over, fortunately.
Oh yes; however, my 1yr old GSD didn't start with the rock fasination until a month ago. I treat this as with any other non appropriate item to mouth or chew by diverting her attention to what is appropriate ie--toy. I carry a toy in my pocket and when she goes for a rock; I say NO and toss her the toy. However; she still insists upon occasionally "sneaking" a rock to play with but gives is up to me when asked.
Having paid $1000 on 2 occasions to have rocks removed from my Giant. Treat this as seriously as if the dog was chewing on the furniture. On pontential remedy would be to get the hottest Cheyeanne pepper powder you can find (it is identified by heat numbers). Wet the rocks and sprinckle ti pepper on the rocks while they are still wet. Do this once or twice a week until the dog stops. The other suggestions are good ideas in addition.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
