i have a 1 1/2 y/o female gsd. she has been doing really well in the heel work at home-no distractions added yet. lately she has begun to crowd me, leaning into my leg. i work her in a chain collar (although this girl is so soft i could probably do everything w/a piece of yarn....lol). anyway, for corrections i have bumped her with my left leg and given little tugs on the leash away from me. i am careful on the level of correction i use knowing how soft she is. now she is starting to slink beside me instead of walk. this girl has got no bite in her--can't even get her to play w/a rag. she is always trying to herd things which i think is where the crowding is coming from. her dad's a ring 1, mom a ppd and she has lines to fero, troll, aly......yeah, i know.....
any ideas on good ways to get her off me w/out breaking her confidence?
Are you working her in drive?.....If so then take a step back and only reward when in correct position...lay off any correction for now. It sounds like this dog is showing signs ofshutting down on ya...you dont want that. Too many corrections can cause a soft dog to crowd because, if trained with compulsion...or even very little with such a soft dog.....they look at it as the safe spot and try to get as close to you as possible to stay safe. Good luck and keep trying...

i'm not new to dogs but i am new to dog training--i don't know all the terminology like "working in drive." i give hot dogs when in position and on this particular dog i try to coax her a little bit rather than leash corrections when out of position.

Untill she stops crowding just do left turnd and tight eft circles. Also watch your petting when she is at your side. Pet her from between her and your leg. Thus your not pushing her towards you. On the slinking assuming she hasnt been treated to rough its probably genetics. Play with her a lot and try to bring up her attitude
The bigest thing people new to obediance do wrong is not praising the dog right. You have to get stupid Loud voise raise the tone be exuberant and lavish it on her. People around might think your nuts but that is the best way for a soft dog like that.
Ron good luck
