Well thanks to all that replied. I spoke with the breeder last week and we came to a conclusion of giving the pup back. It was the hardest thing I had to do, but the health of my wife was important. Seeing he was only 4 months old, she said he would adapt in his new home within days. She had someone lined up already. So to thank everyone for there info.
Dogs, in my limited experience, don't inherently smell. They have doggy breath, wet dog smell, gas, etc. I truly think it all comes back to food. I live in a barely 1200sqft house with 3 dogs, 3 cats, and no smell. (according to others, since I know I might not notice it in my own house). My animals eat raw food. They do not have bad breath, greasy, smelly, coats, gas, or any of those other pleasantries. Innova and Wellness are good, as far as kibble goes, but are rich, and may cause gas or diarrhea during the transition phase. Raw is better! And cheaper!
Food contributes loads to odor. Eat healthy, homecooked meals light on meat for a few days then eat some McDonalds.. I guarantee your body AND byproducts will smell pretty bad after the fast food!
A family member's beagle was on Iams, pretty stinky, poor coat. He was temporarily switched to BilJac, which isn't great but the dog's smell and coat improved greatly, now he's on Eukanuba and he's shteeeenky and his coat is gross and flaky. Whenever I go to visit I wash the leather sofa and vacuum the cloth one and baking-soda/vacuum the heck out of everything. Every single time I pet him I wash my hands afterwards because of the smell.
Sometimes my house smells a little doggy, but I only notice that when the kids have been gone all day and the wife isn't cooking <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
