my gsd loves hunting small birds. I live in an area with lots of them and he spends most of his time hunting those. He rarely gets them, but when he does, he eats(or tries to) them. Is there any problem on this behaviour and is this going to end eventually?
Note: When i see that he got the bird, i try to get it from him. Even if he is swallowing it as a whole. He is 10mo old.
Yes there is something wrong with the dog eating the birds, for the most part they are usually loaded with parasites. This can be transferred to your dog. If your dog has been doing this for awhile I would suggest you take a specimen to vet and have it tested.

You have a good dog. Prey drive! But stop the bird hunting. Like the prior poster said, they have lice and such, but what bothers me more is that, like cats, a non-natural predator can really wreak havoc on a vulnerable bird population. I'm pro-hunting for people, but dogs/cats don't respect breeding seasons and weaker species. Monitor your pooch when he's outdoors-be good to the birdies. They eat nasty bugs.
thanks for your answers. Unfortunately i can't monitor all the time he is outdoors, since i don't let him in the house(i live in a 1000m2 lot, closed by walls). As i told you, when i see that he caught the bird i take it from him. I treat my dogs for parasites every 3 or 4 months to leave him free of these. At least these birds that he hunts are very common here in Brasil.
Thanks for all you answers. If you still have any comments, i would really like to read them.
