I agree with you Nita. I also had a dog with broken teeth and AFTER they had been repaired by doing root canals we went back to bitework without a problem. This dog ended up with 3 canine and 2 molars with root canals. The biggest problem is once the teeth start breaking i.e. a canine, it puts more pressure on the remaining three EVEN if the dog has full grips and over time weakens the others. That explained to me the problem with the 2 other canines, but could never figure the molars. I did hear one break during a bitework session and the dog never skipped a beat... my heart did, then sunk after the session and I checked her mouth
But she went on to partcipate in 3 national events besides regional and local club trials... with V scores.
The important thing is to get to a vet and have it repaired! Bad teeth, abscesses, gingivitis can all lead to other major health issues.
Just an update:
She took the dog to the vet and there are no fragments in the gum thankfully. The vet said that she is tender with her kibble because it might pinch against her sensitive gum area that is left exposed now. He said to continue wetting her food every other feeding.
I guess he didn't say too much about the bite training, but I think she is going to train obedience and maybe agilty but reward with bites or the ball to keep her drives up. We figure a bite here and there can't hurt anything.
Thanks for all the advice!
