Not sure if this is a the forum to leave this, please move if it is not. Problem: I'm getting an eight week old GSD any day now. The problem is, I'm going on vacation the 10th of march. I know that that the timing is poor but the vacation was booked a year ago and I thought that we would have the puppy long before the vacation. This is a replacement pup for one with bad hips and the breeder took a while to get me a new pup. I'm leaving the other dog at home with my daughter, but she works and I don't want to leave a puppy outside all day and she can't be crated all day either. Is leaving a young puppy like this at a good kennel a good idea? I can't think of anything else and I'm feeling very guilty about the whole thing. Any ideas???
Did you tell the breeder your problem? Maybe they will hold the pup for you a few weeks since it was a replacement pup to begin with.
Or, do what I did... take the pup with you on a 5 week vacation. Not so great for vacation, but great puppy socialization.
There is no way in HE!! I would leave a pup at a bording kennel at this age. The workers are not paid well enough and half don't know dogs, much less puppies.

Deanna is 100% correct, As she posted, see if the breeder will continue to hold the pup or take it on vacation with you.
I like to pick up a pup at 12 weeks instead of the 8 weeks most breeders sugest. JMHO
Pets are not allowed in the resort we are staying at. I don't want to not take the puppy, sense it was difficult to get the pup in the first place, paying customers first. Would leaving the puppy outside with my other dogs work? The weather here is rainey most of time but not cold. Puppy could stay in her crate at night and on days my daughter doesn't work.
Do the pup a favor and pass on this one. To many things can go wrong in my opinion, to leave a working pup this age with someone else or alone for extended periods of time.
Kim, I took my vacation to spend with my pup during this critical time period, and I'm glad I did. She has developed and adjusted nicely.
My schedule is very busy now and the training is not progressing as quickly as I like. I do think that the early imprinting spent with her has made all the difference, in how quickly she learns and her temperment, which is wonderful.
I'm sure others with more experience can give their views, this is just my experience. I took advice from the web boards and the literature I read and followed through. (Wow, a pup, it has been more than 10years since the last one!)
Maybe you can hold off for another pup, or take this one with you, or stay home with it. Such valuable time...take advantage of it! Good Luck with your new additon and best wihes.
