Algazar is a healthy, and I assume happy 6 month old GSD. It is snowing and sleeting right now, and I put him out in his outside pen for a few moments. He has a very large run with a wooden floor. I put a deck type flooring throughout the whole thing. 75% of it is covered to give him protection from thr sun and rain, and he has a nice dog house under the covered part. He stands out in the rain (or in todays case, the sleet and snow) rather than to move under the roof or get in his house to stay out of the weather. Can anyone explain this behavior? Is he that stupid, or am I the one that is stupid? Why would a dog stand in the freezing rain when he can go into a nice warm house? Thanks ...
I have a 3 year old gsd that does the same thing. When it rains Orfhea usually stays in the rain instead of getting in his kennel. My guess is that they are not cold! Dogs are very smart animals so i cant possibly imagine that they are dumb and thats why they stay in the cold or that they preffer being cold. Then again i am not an expert so........ anyone? i would like to know the answer at this one aswell!!!!!!!
a double-coated dog with a coat in good condition is only getting superficially wet. If you part the fur you will probably see dry fluffy undercoat-your dogs own set of "long-johns". Healthy coat of proper length in good condition=nice, well insulated dog that can deal easily with cold temps. Also if your dogs have a fairly dark coat or saddle they can pick up some heat from the sun. It is -25 degrees C but bright and sunny here and I have a dogyard full of dogs sleeping in the snow or on top of their houses!
my coated gsd prefers to stay out in the snow, rain or sleet too, rather than her doghouse, i know she isn't stupid, so she just isn't bothered by the weather, i guess , it bothers me more, cause i have to deal with a wet dog when i get home.
It took me a while to get my GSD to get into her doghouse. She used to sit on our deck and peer into the window - guess she wanted to come in. After a while she gave up. Now she goes to the doghouse if it's raining really hard and also for the night. Since your dog is still young, it may simply take her a while to get used to the doghouse.
