When I hike with my dog, she carries her own water in her backpack. I empty 2 20oz pepsi bottles and fill them with water which should be good for a 3 or 4 hour hike. If you take a sturdy ziploc baggie that works great to pour the water into(she hasn't torn one yet)
This is a great site for getting a custom backpack for your dog. They are not that expensive for the quality of the workmanship. If you buy those flat flexible water containers at an outdoor store, they fit very nicely in the backpack. I bought the banzai explorer pack for my standard poodle several years ago. It will outlast him and be good for many years to come.
Good luck! http://www.wolfpacks.com
Like Jo, my dog carries a backpack, but I carry all the water. It's heavy and sloshes, and if she decides to do something doggy like roll on wet turds, the plastic bottles don't get crushed. I also carry canteens on a belt-you can't have too much water. My dog can drink out of the metal cup on the canteen.
Dog's backpack usually has a first aid kit (for her, although I'd use it if I had to), plastic baggies of dry food-hers and mine-rope, generally light unbreakable stuff that is in sealed baggies.
Especially since you're hiking with a curly dog, take a good brush for getting the cling-ons off. And some insect repellant-skin so soft is great, and if your poochie is light skinned, sunscreen. Nice to have baby wipes if she gets really filthy...oh yes and hydrogen peroxide or ipecac if she eats some suspect thing.
One of those larger Outward Hound type fanny-packs is all I carry. Although I recently bought one of those over-the-shoulder types that carry a water bottle (for me). I take gauze and vet-wrap, baggies, 1 or 2 apples and a couple of peanut butter sandwiches (with or without banana). The dog will eat both.
I never take grooming equipment with me. I try not to be that anal about my dog's coat. He'll stand still and let me de-burr him. Who cares about a few broken hairs? He's not a show dog, and if you do it right it doesn't hurt him.
Keeping your standard clipped in a serviceable hunting retriever clip is a good idea. Even in the winter when his hair is a good 4 inches long it's not that hard to get twigs, etc. out. And we walk through the local conservation area at least 2X a week for 2 hours.
I hike three to four times a month with my Mal. I wear a camelback and carry about 100 oz of water for both of us. If I want to give him a drink I just neal down and squeeze the bite valve and shoot the water into his mouth. If your dog doesn't like to drink that way brink a folding cloth bowl. It's hot in Hawaii and with the humidity we have to carry alot of water.
