I have a GSD that is a pup from a litter of two certified police dogs. This dog is a coward and does not have a fetch drive or at least I haven't discovered it yet. Would anyone offer up some sort of help in this situation?? I have trained several of my own family dogs but this is my first real dog that I would like to train in protection and drug searching. Just a little history on me I am a Trooper with the Kentucky State Police and I have not ever attempted to train a dog of this caliber. This dog is almost 1 year old. My kids get out in the yard and play with him and he is great. But let me step out into the yard and his ears lay down and he tucks his tail between his legs. I try to praise this dog when he does good. He acts as if he is afraid of me because of my voice. I cannot understand why there is such a problem with him in feeling comfortable around me. Any suggestions from those that are experienced of have some experience????
What are the pedigree's of these dogs?...Just because they are police certified doesnt mean they are any good....especially to breed. Unfortunatlly in alot of states the police dog certs are a joke. And unfortunatly alot of states use rescue and show dogs beacuse they can't afford quality dogs.
Now with that out of the way. The retrieve drive is natural. You can build it to a point. Also you can do a forced retrieve. What are you looking for?
Also what do you mean by saying that your dog is a coward? Need more info on this.
Looks to me like bonding problem. The dog is looking at your children as littermates but acknowledging you as a dominant male <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Maybe you had done a bit too much of disciplinary job with him ar not spending enough time playing with him as Maggie said.
Do some prey work with him will build up some confidence and bonding. Good luck.

When the dog is confused, blame not the dog but shoot the handler.
