There has been a new dog trainer move into my area and he is telling people that he learned how to train dogs in the Marine Corp. Some people I believe are impressed with that.I thought that military dogs were trained by the Air Force in Texas.Anyway am I wrong about that? Its possible he could have been a handler but that is completely different in my opinion. Then again he also said he was in an artillery unit. I was artillery in the army and didnt see many dog trainers hanging around.Anyway my question is are there trainers that learned in the Marines or is actual dog training an Airforce thing.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
Hmm...David, as far as I know, all military dog handlers are military police. Scount dog team handlers used in RVN were infantrymen, but that was over 30 years ago.
My BS detection meter is sounding an alarm here!
The dog training center at Lackland Air Force Base, is a Department of Defense School. The instructors come from all branches of the military, as well as the dog trainers assigned. They also conduct training for all branches of the military.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
Indeed instructors for Lackland can come from various branches of the Armed Services.
Most are handlers that got the choice job of getting stationed at Lackland and usually do two years there. Sometimes three if they're married, if I can recall correctly some conversations I've had about the subject with those involved.
As to whether or not they are "qualified" dog trainers you have to ask what they are training dogs to do, and exactly what they were trainiing at Lackland. Some are assigned to train dogs, others to train handlers with some old worn out but trained dogs. All pose hallenges but there are many different disciplines out there in dogdom and ceertainly the narrow expereinces at Lackland won't qualify someone to do even a magority of them.
