When is a female GSD "in heat"? Is it right before they start their period, or while they are actually having their period? Also, can she get pregnant while she is having her period? I know that this is a new guy question but please bear with me.
The time period when the female begins to be attractive to males through her receptive stage and slightly past is considered 'in heat'. In most females it is 2 to 3 weeks. Every bitch is different so please take precautions the whole time. Some females will stand for the male on the 4th day of noticeable heat and others not until the 14th. The spotting that you may notice usually starts a few days in and subsides during the most fertile stage. Please check a good dog book and get all the details. At first she will not allow the male to mount her but that can change within hours so be sure to keep her safe. I've heard it said that, "If your house has a chimney, your bitch will get pregnant." It's pretty true!
Go to the Leerburg Training Articles and look under 'Breeding' and look for the article titled 'Reading vaginal smears to determine when to breed'. Ed does a good job of explaining the process of when the bitch is in 'season'.
BTW, if your bitch is in heat, don't let her out of your sight, not for one second!
Maggie,
I couldn't find the article that you mentioned. Maybe my question was a little vague and I should be more to the point. My bitch has been bleeding for about four days, and I'm wondering if she can get pregnant. I know that in human females, the bleeding is the discharging of the uterin lining, and it is highly unlikely that she will get pregnant. Is my dog discharging her uterin lining or excreting an invitation to mate? Can she get pregnant while she is bleeding?
