I just need to vent. Maybe I am crazy, but I just don't understand how someone can critize me for putting a sickly aggressive dog down. I am going to make a long story short, My 7 month old lab, had severe hip displysia, actually more of a deformity, a knee that slipped in and out, and epilepsy. From the time he was 10 weeks old he showed signs of being aggressive a jeckle and hyde, totally unpreticable. He attacked my 9 year old son in front of me at 7 months. He pinned him against the wall, my son immediatly held him back by the throat while he was drooling, barking, lip curled and snapping at his face. I pulled him off my son and fought him into his crate. I put him down the next day. I read every article I could find in this site and many others regarding aggression. I did leadership exersizes, no sleeping on the furniture, nothing for free, regular obedience training ect. from the time that dog was 10 weeks old. Sometimes he was affectionate. Others times you couldn't even touch him. I know I didn't do anything wrong. I'm not the dog trainer of the world, but I sure know alot about training in general. I am telling you this dog was in alot of pain, and on top of it was nuts. (chololate lab). Some jerk on another board just about chewed me a new butt, and said I thought dogs were disposable (because since then I got another puppy, but this time from a reputable breeder) and I should have done more to try and keep the dog. I mean come on, for those of you who have children, would you have kept the dog????Thanks for listening, just mad at the breeder, mad at the person who GAVE me the dog for a gift, mad I had to put the little guy down, because he did have his good qualities too, I really did like him and I was willing to work through his problems to keep him, but attacking a child???? I have 4 kids and those 4 kids have friends, I just couldn't take a chance that he might hurt one of them. The only reason that dog didn't hurt my son was because if he was around him it was because I was present. My son was just traumitized. He begged me not to get another puppy. I did anyway, only I paid the bucks for her, researched the pedigree, 4 generations worth of show dog stock all with OFA hips, elbows and cert eyes. She is the sweetest tempered little black lab anyone can have, my sons in love with her along with the other kids, and best of all, I got to show him, not all dogs want to bite him!! Thanks for the ears.
