In the past I never cared much for the sable color...my preference being the bi-colour. But doing the research before buying a pup, I became a convert! Of course it helped that the one dog I chose on temperament and drive (not color) happened to be a sable...
I find that sometimes I can't tell a sable from the standard black-n-tan saddle-back at a distance, but a true sable has the undercolor over the saddle area of its back.
I went to that Arlett site just for fun, but if I'm reading her right, she's out to lunch!
"If we were to breed a black & yellow female (with low pigmentation) with a homozygous sable (AA), i.e. a male that dominantly produces sable, we would get only sable pups in different sable variations. On average, theoretically, 50% of them would be homozygous for sable and 50% would be heterozygous (AB).
... since there is no existing male (at least that I know of) that dominantly produces sable."
If her phrase "black and yellow female" refers to a black and tan saddle, there's no way any pups are going to be homozygous for sable. They would all be heterozygous. And I can't believe she says she doesn't know of any homozygous sable dogs. They certainly exist; my dog's father is one.
Hey Lee, you should come to Florida next month and discuss it with her, lol. She's judging conformation for a WDA trial here. Just a thought.
Well. . .I take that back. . .it might be fun to watch Lee get in a fist fight over homowhatever colorzygous sableyellow genes in the GSD.
