My wifes uncle is a K9 deputy. His dog is an import out of Holland. The dog is KNPV titled and titled Metlof PH1. He is interested in breeding his dog with my bitch. She comes from working lines out of Holland also. Her pedigree is strong, her father titled Metlof PH1, along with others. Some pedigrees are stronger, but hers is certainly acceptable and could hold its own.
If we were to breed the dogs, does anyone have an idea what type of demand there might be for the finished product? Obviously the pups would need to be tested and so on, but it is our opinion that based on the drives of the potential Sire and Dam and the pedigree of the two dogs, that the puppies should be strong candidates for police work, or protection work. Any thoughts or comments?

Any thoughts or comments? Yes, don't do it. Take time to research lines, learn as much as you can about your bitch's lines and what would "mesh" well with her phenotype as well as genotype. You could unintentionally bring around a health or temperment problem. Do your research, do all the health screening (not just hips/elbows), think seriously about what you hope to accomplish with this breeding (other than having pups and/or selling them), then when you have all of that, make an informed decision on whether you should do the breeding. Finding a good mentor that has been breeding Mals successfully for a while wouldn't hurt either.

When you start talking about pheno this and fito that, it is greek to me. I will research both lines, and see if I can get some advice from a reputable Malinois breeder. The bottom line is I want to learn as much as I can about it all....your advice is appreciated.

When you start talking about pheno this and fito that, it is greek to me. All the more reason to take your time and learn as much as you can. There are lots of dogs out there.Don't breed "just because". Have a set goal in mind for contributing to the betterment of the breed.

I dont know alot about KNPV but isnt there one dog each year that is the champion and that dog is the, "Metlof"(sp) for the year. And the Metlofs are never sold, or never leave the country. I was always told that if some one says they have a Metlof,,,,,,they dont. Not in this country anyway.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it! |

My dog's father was titled met lof, and he was working here in the states when he fathered her. His score was 445 if I remember correctly. Also my wife's uncles dog is titled met lof, I have seen his title paper also, and he is also here in the states working here in Southern Utah.......perhaps you were told wrong, or the titles are fake....I really am not certain how the KNPV works. I just know there is alot of it in my dog's pedigree, and the potential stud dog.

Does anyone know for certain how the KNPV titles work, and if the dogs titled metlof remain in Holland?

I researched the KNPV scoring system just now. Any dog that scores above 402 points out of a possible 440 will receive a certificate-metlof (with honors). I also double checked my dog's father's certificate, and his score was 440 rather than 445, my mistake. It seems that it is quite possible for a dog titled metlof to make it into the states. I could not find any information about that association keeping those dogs. Also, the KNPV allows civilian membership which suggests that any person could bring their dog to be evaluated for a certificate. I would bet that there has been a few dogs brought in by civilians that have received metlof certificates.

In the KNPV, as Drew correctly states, Met Lof simply means With Honours.
In the case of a PH1 (Politehund 1 or Police Dog 1) it is a score of 400 or better out of the available 440 points.
Thee are MANY PH1 dogs in the states (got one sitting right here licking my feet as I write this, certificate's on the wall). The Dutch DO sell the Met Lof dogs to the states, as they bring a higher price than the dogs that score lower. It's a point of pride with them.
The ones they DON'T sell are what they consider to be the best breeding prospects, Met Lof or not.
There is a KNPV Championship held each year in September with one winner in each of the categories offered by the KNPV, where Met Lof scores are REQUIRED just to be there (there's other criteria as well).
Hope this helps,
Scott
