Does anyone know where I can get plans to build a 4 hole dog trailer? My van is becoming too small, and I don't want to buy one of those cruise ships(Excursions, Suburbans, etc) to haul the dogs around.
Try looking at some of the pictures on http://www.sleddogcentral.com and check under "features" on the left hand side of the page- there is a section called "dog truck pictures" that will show you some photos of dog carriers of every size - some BIG and some pretty modest. You could also search under suppliers on that site and look up some of the companies like Chatmac, etc. that specialize in dog trucks and boxes, trailers etc. They are a good source for door screens, stainless steel hardware, etc. Alot of people build the main box themselves and then put good stainless steel doors, custom vents, etc on, the doors taking the worst of the abuse from the dogs generally. There is also a listing there for Engert who make the best latch bolts for dog box doors. I don't know of any specific plans as all vehicles are a little different but I would suggest taking the dimensions of the space you have to work with and build your own set of plans from there. I have managed to build a couple of sets of boxes from scratch and believe me, I am no fine carpenter so if I can build a pretty nice looking set of boxes - anybody can. It does help for your first set to have a good idea of what you want so checking out somebody elses boxes before you start is a good idea and lets you see what works and what needs improvement. My original dog truck was a Ford Ranger and though I have moved up to a big 4X4 - I sure miss my little Ranger at the gas pumps - much cheaper to run!
I agree with you about missing your pickup, especially with these gas prices. That's why I am looking to build a trailer, I can have a smaller more economical vehicle and still cart around a large number of dogs. Thank you for the help. I appreciate it.
