I have a bitch that just had a litter of four pups. The first was born breeched, the other one appears the same. She was having a hard time, so that is when I took her to the vet and had the C done to have the other pups. She has had litters in the past that were no problemss. My question is can she have another litter later, and number two, will it have to be delivered by a C. My vet said maybe. I have never had this happen before, but she produces super pups.
It is normal for puppies to be born breech. About 1/2 of them come that way.
I am very very very cautious of having a bitch have a "C" Section. You would be better advised to have a shot of oxytocin on hand.
The only time I will seriously consider a "C" section is with older females that are not in good enough shape to deliver pups. This can be overcome by putting the female on a serious exercise program.
Ok. I should have explained more. The pups were stuck in the birth canal sideways. I have never took note to this before. Can this bitch have pups again? She has had pups before with no problems.
Ah, pup stuck transverse in the vagina --good indication for a c-section. I'm glad you got her to the vet in good time and that she's doing well. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
She should be able to whelp naturally afterwards. While adhesions formed as a result of surgury may mean that some bitches have to have subsequent litters delivered by C-section, many don't have problems afterwards.
Let her recover fully, then do a physical asessment and see.
Yes thank you both for replies. While she delivered the first pup and it was and still is alive, it took about two hours from the first indications of her going to go inot labour. THe second one came about three hours later, but it was clear she was having problems. THere were contractions going on, but no pup. This was when I called the vet, as oxitocen was not a good thing to use while contractions were going on! I do have it on hand though.
Yes your female will be able to have more pups.I had a 3yr old shepherd that had 13,the last three were stuck,I had a c-section done and all is good.this spring she had 8 with no problems, all were healthy,to make sure things go well I never let a bitch
welp alone.Good Luck on your next litter!
