We went to Miami to see the south florida schutzhund trials last weekend and were impressed with the quality of both dogs and some handlers. Phil Hoechler who is the president of the club had an amazing dog that scored a 99 in the protection phase. We are going to be joining either the south florida schutzhund club or the Broward schutzhund club. Is anyone else a member of either club? Or are you familiar with either club and know which club is better for someone new to the sport?
I was also at that trial, although I did not enter my dog. I agree - there were some impressive dog/handler teams there. In fact, Phil that you mention is the 2002 DVG National America Sch III winner and I believe he won in 2003 as well. I met a lot of members of that club and I think they are a quality organization. Their website is http://www.sfschutzhund.com/index.html to learn more.
I don't know about the Broward Co. club but the schutzhund folks I know drive from Palm Beach Co. through Broward to get to the Dade Co. club. I don't mean that to be negative to the Broward folks (mabey my friends just like to drive).
Are you currently or formerly involved in schutzhund? If you live closer to Palm Beach Co. I can refer you (through personal email) to some French Ring, KNPV and other protection dog clubs in the area.
Thanks for your reply Jim A. I also live in Palm Beach county, Delray Beach to be exact. I agree that the club members in Miami seemed like a great group of people. The only reason i hesitate to join their group is because the fact that the meetings are on tuesday nights at 6:00 pm, the problem would be leaving work early every tuesday. Even though it is only 50 miles away with rush hour traffic it would be 2 hours to get to the field. Now the Broward club meets at 3:00 on Sunday. I am just not yet sure of how the Broward group is but I plan to go and take a look this sunday. And to answer your question I am new to Schutzhund although 2 months ago i bought a sch1 female from Germany so i am trying to learn as much as I can and am eager to join a club. But please feel free to email me if you want with any club info. that you think might be helpful.
Jim: I'm curious what you found out about the Broward club. I too am located in Palm Beach (Loxahatchee) and hate the idea of driving to south Dade county for a good club.
You can call Tela Wilcox at 561-790-0092 she is president of the south florida working dog assoc. The club meets near you at Seminole Palms and also at Loxahatchee Groves park.
