I'm very new to dog training and am trying to learn as much as I can. According to things I've read, my dog has tremendous prey/food drive. What is the significance of this? Don't most all dogs have this to some degree? Does having a significant amount of this type drive indicate that the dog might be well suited for Schutzhund/protection training, etc.?
The significance is that these are tools that you can use to your advantage in training. The first thing you have to have to train is motivation. If there is something the dog wants badly, whether it's food or a toy, he'll be willing to work to earn it (just like we work to earn a buck). If the dog has low drives, thus low motivation, sometimes you're left with no alternative but to provide a motivation FOR him: fear (compulsion training).
Prey is one component used for protection/schutzhund training. But first and foremost, you need self-confidence, courage, strong nerves. If you have that package, yup, he can be a nice sport or protection dog.
