What kinds of papers are you refering too? First of all if, you have any questions, you should definitely contact the breeder that sold you the dog.
Many times, the dog (yours) will not be named on papers furnished by the breeder. It will simply state that the pup was sired by purebred "so and so" from purebred dam, "so and so." If you are registering the dog with the AKC, for example, it will then be up to you to name the dog and send in your money. Other times the pup will already be named by the breeder and you can call it whatever you want, but its registered name will be decided by the breeder. This is common in co-ownerships, for example, in which the breeder wishes to keep their Kennel name on the dog. The parents of the pup are usually champions or highly titled.
Other papers you may or may not recieve from the breeder are a 3 or 5 generation pedigree, a health guarantee, and breed specific info, etc.
Someone please jump in in here and make it clearer than I am!
The AKC application should come with a puppy or you should be asked to at least sign it. A breeder working under the SV system will usually name the pups with a letter specific call name and then the kennel name...for example, my 4 month old pups are all C's - Cairo, Cito, Cougar, Cheetah and Csabre...males first and then females. Puppies are tatooed at 7ish weeks, in alpha numerical order and names must be decided by that point. I did give a couple of people a few choices as I have a sort of 'theme' in my name scheme, and like the call names to be strong names, predator names or family names...Buyers sign the AKC applications and I send them in - this way I know that the names corespond to the names given to the tattooer who has sent in the litter application sent in for the USA-SV supplemental registration. My puppy buyers did not get any offical papers when they picked up their puppies..what I did give them was copies of both the AKC and USA-SV applications, copies of the dam's papers and koer report. If I had copies of the sires, they would have gotten that too.
If your breeder is not following this system, then you will get an application from AKC to fill in and send in to register the puppy. One word of caution - unless you have been specifically advised or requested to do so - do NOT use the "last name" of either parent on your puppy. Those names are actually identified with the breeder's kennels of those dogs and it is not proper to use them. There have been a few upset Europeans when their kennel names were just randomly pulled out of a pedigree and used by someone who did not realize that this was a faux pas!!!
