As far as I know, the proposed AKC Working Dog Sport is still on hold. There were some pilot demo trials at the GSDCA and DPCA Nats last year, but the AKC Board has not yet approved the program. The AKC Delegates gave the program a negative vote, and it appears that the supporters of the program are delaying a formal vote by the AKC Board until they can line up enough support for it to pass. These delays have been going on at least since last July, which doesn't bode well for the program.
It appears to me that the proposed rules for the Working Dog Sport program, which were on AKC's website for months, have been removed. I can no longer find the rules there via a google search.
A good friend of mine is an AKC field rep and said that when the Working Dog Program was brought up for discussion, people spoke *against* it at a three or four to one ratio over those that are supporting it. Plus many of the nay sayers were from the larger, more powerful clubs.
He say it most likely isn't going to happen, and I believe him.
IMHO. there is a severe lack of working dog knowledge in the delegate body...
One of the nay-sayer Delegates made a point to get his remarks recorded in the meeting minutes from that Oct '03 Delegate Meeting:
"...And I must tell you myself, we spent our lives trying to take our dogs down the straight and narrow path to avoid bringing out the aggressive tendencies of the dog."
Mr Kelly, who made this remark, is a Dachshund fan. (He is listed as director in the Minnesota Dachshund Club and serves as President and Show Chairman)
VC, If mr kelley had to survive on what his dog could catch, he could start a new diet in his name. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
The CKC is trying to get something like this going. So far its sounding good. They want a rewright of the protection aspect. They felt it sounded like sch. It may take some time but it sounds like it may be passed in the next year or so. Ill keep you updated. Iknow some of the people that are puting this together and can get the inside scoop.
Ann wrote (mr Kelly, who made this remark, is a Dachshund fan) I hope mr Kelly never finds out that there some cool little Minis out there doing earth work. He may want to strike them from the registration.
