Hi, I put a deposit down for an Argentine Dogo back around Oct with a breeder called Liongate Kennels in Ft. White, FL. The litter was born on 12/22/04 and today, 1/4//05, I found out that all 8 puppies died because "the mother's milk went bad". Can someone please tell me if this is likely with someone who is a responsible breeder? How common is this? Was there NO WAY to save any of the puppies? Should I ask for my deposit back and find another bredder? Has anyone ever heard of this breeder before?
Sorry about the book of questions, my boyfriend and i were just SOOO excited about this puppy and it was devastating to find this out.
If there was a legitimate health concern with the mother's milk, then it is entirely possible to loose the whole litter. To tube feed an entire litter of pups isn't always a realistic choice. I would hope that they put the pups down.
You should ask a vet about the health issue.
I'd consider another breeder. . .and another breed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
It's entirely possible to lose a litter from bad milk. Usually what happens is the bitch gets a uterine infection or severe mastitis and the toxins make the milk "poison" to the pups.
I disagree about tube feeding an entire litter being unrealistic. IF you know what you are doing, it's much easier than bottle raising and I personally would try to save them before putting pups down. It may not have been realistic for this particular breeder however,
I don't think this makes your breeder irresponsible, possibly just inexperienced about the signs that lead up to this. We monitor the females temperature twice a day after whelping, make sure she isn't having a unusual discharge and that her mammary glands are not infected, abscessed or 'abnormal' for a nursing mom.
