Well - as you say, rationalization!!!! They figure that they CAN improve on the flaws - they don't expect to get them from your own comments observations! I have also heard alot of people who think that a bitch can become stronger in charater and more focused after a litter - heard that from quite a few people.
The breakdown of not just the GSD but most any breed can be illustrated by the AKC's lack of even minimal required credentials - in the GSD - hip ratings, and passing the BH at a minimum - which would eliminate these two bitches if the SV system was followed. Hey, there are plenty of idiots who breed because they love their dog, and think every one will want one JUST like it! and have not a clue as to the breed standard!
I guess I was alluding to basically responsible breeders who have some clue and follow at least minimal criteria of hip clearances and temperment certifications - the clueless ones don't know what they are doign and still intentionally aren't trying to breed poor dogs. HD is absolutely NOT predictable and can occur in the same litter as an OFA Excellent...there have been several National level competition dogs who have HD - Racker Entzal, Artemis Kiefern Tal - whose littermate is OFA-Excellent and whose connections have publically acknowledged his status, and another one whose name eludes me right now.
Breeding is a juggling act of balancing out weaknesses with strengths, and it is unfortunate that even in the best planned litters, there are occassionally pups who have problems! But before labeling puppies as "lemons", I would think there would have to be some criteria of establishing normal standards, adequate precautions and guidelines prior to any legal action.
