Sometimes I read something that is so dumb that I wonder if it's a joke...sadly, this jewel of advice is actually listed on the "Animal Planet" ( Discovery Channel ) Pet Reference page.
Can you guess the big name dog trainer that suggests this as a way to stop a problem?
"Take a paper bag and fill it with a palmfull of rice. Hide outside the (apartment) door, and when the bark starts, run into that house with the bag of rice, and shake it, even try to hit the dog with it. Act very angry, and I really mean angry! Scare the you-know-what out of the dog. Do this a few times over the course of several days, and your problem stops. It's really quite simple."
Ummm, OK - I sure want my dog to become insecure and afraid whenever I enter the room - that'll sure work better than a bark collar.
This is the best advice that Animal Planet can come up with? I'm seriously considering writing them an E Mail about how bad this advice is.
He must be talking about working with a puppy, and yeah that is really bad advice.
He sounds like he wants someone to get bit, Will, imagine someone running into your house trying to scare your dog with a bag of rice in a paper sack. Snack! Insurance claim...
Will's dog will be expecting some meat with his rice. Arm, leg, doesn't really matter much. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I think this method can be broken down into steps:
Step 1: Put rice in bag.
Step 2: Go outside and wait for barking.
Step 3: Burst into house and shake rice at dog; be loud.
Step 4: Get the crap bitten out of you by a dog that doesn't take kindly to grain-waving bobbleheads.
This sounds like a great way to test your dog's reaction skills and see how civil he is. I like it.
