I hope that I have posted in the right topic. I am new to the forum and what I have read really makes me feel that this is the forum for me. I have two GSDs and one is a SAR dog. I live in a small town so all that is required for me and my dog is just searching for missing people (and not much of that either). They have made us feel welcome (not wanting to step on any law enforcement toes). My next training is water cadaver and then land cadaver. I'm trying to stay on top of her training so we will be prepared if called. I hope I don't cause anyone here to write me love letters that I have read before being approved on this forum. All I am seeking is good training techniques, good advice and friends. I'll try not to ask any stupid questions. I must admit that I'm a little scared to post.
I can't believe the SAR dogs or Singapore Alsatian Rescue's could be so popular!!
I meant, cripes, just the cost to bring them over from Asia is high. And then, all you people seem to do with these dogs is to take them tracking........
I got into this because my GSD has good drive and gets excited when she sees her harness and I like to go out at night to practice. My problem with her is that she is very protective of my jeep and will not let too many people come near it, but when she is out of the jeep she is a totally different dog, much nicer. She is great with people and other dogs but when it comes to the jeep that's a different chapter. One of my friends that have two GSD's say not to worry about it but I would like to have her behave in the jeep just like she does out. I spent a lot of time and commitment with her, any advice.
I have struggled with the same problem with my dog for SAR
The clear expectation IS that your dog WILL be good in the crate and NOT protect the car, which is a LOT to ask of a GSD but expected of a SAR dog.
I had great success with Toby by getting in with some local dog training classes and doing the food and clicker thing for being quiet in the crate (we did not do the classes, just parked before class and trained as they walked by). I do not think the ecollar here is good as it could incite aggression (Lou? do you have a tecnique or disagree) I am also preparing to do the same with Cyra. I have also told other people to give her a sharp "quiet" command if she goes off when they walk by and that seems to help too.........
I would love to hear comments. It is NOT always possible to park so that dogs and people are not walking by.
