I just got home from work this evening and my husband told me that one of the dogs got in the cat food and ate about 5 lbs of it. I have a strong hunch it was my youngest dog,Penelope. Her belly is very distended, but she is not in any pain and moves around well. She is passing gas and she is out for a SLOW walk to poop. Of course, I am freaking out about bloat. Her belly is so huge! it could be just the sheer volume of food that she ate, but I am very worried. Any thing I can do? aside from watch and worry? How long until she is out of the woods? I will be up with her for most of the night, but I would still like some info...
Please, any replies would be appreciated!

I work in a vet's office, and they feed all their dogs cat food all the time. Short of giving her an upset stomach from the change in food, (not to mention the amount she ate!), she should live thru it without too much discomfort.
Does she eat a natural diet normally, or do you feed a dry food? If so, cat food tends to have more meat in it than dogfood, which I think is one reason dogs love it.
I just switched to a raw natural diet; she has been doing great on it, she actually ate her morning portion of chicken, and then get into the food.
you are right about the upset stomache,er..all sorts of gaseous explosions from her right now! She just had a large poop, and she has bowel sounds, so I think she will be ok...
But if she shows any signs of distress, we are poised and ready to take her to the er vet. It may have been more than 5# now that I think on it...

Dogs! :^) Have you given her any pepto or kaopectate? That might help with some of the gas. as long as things are passing, she's not impacted. Do keep in mind that this will not be the last time she tries this. Dogs are DRAWN to cat food and litter boxes. (this is the most gross thing I've ever seen a dog do).
I do hope she isn't sleeping in your room tonight :^)
thanks you guys. she seems to be ok this morning, but her belly is still pretty distended. she was a little restless last night, but this morning she is her usual perky/hyper self . I was just so worried about bloat last night... now we just have to clean up the yard from 5-10# of digested cat food.
thanks a lot
