For those of you that live in hurricane regions, do you have a pre-packed evacuation kit for your dogs?
If not, it's well worth your time to do so now, while you can take the time to properly plan ahead ( I had four extra dogs staying with me last week, brought by a couple from Florida that evacuated - and I still had considerable damage done to my place, and I live in inland Georgia! )
Packing list:
Crate ( mandatory!!)
dog food and bowls
water
dog medications, including heartworm prevention
multiple leashes and collars
crate fans ( AC and hurricanes are usually mutually exclusive )
identification tags on all dogs at all times
towels
flashlights ( those late night potty walks in howling winds are oh so enjoyable... )
batteries
Feel free to add your ideas!!
At least there was a silver lining in that crappy week, I ended up buying the Pike son from the folks that stayed with me.

Yeah. . .ya'll aren't boasting about the great weather NOW. . .are ya!
No really, I'm sorry for all the people that were hurt or affected by the storm. That sucks. Good advice to have a care pack for your dogs, no matter where you live. It can come in handy.
It never ceases to amaze me how many people don't have some kind of emergency pack of basic necessities. Be it storms, earthquakes, fires, terror attacks, wild dog packs, or just plain the end of the world . . .there is something that can affect anyone at any time. Yet people have nothing.
A jug of water and some canned chili for -F- sakes?!?

Don't forget a copy of proof of rabies shots. The aftermath of a disaster is the worst time to have your dog in quarrantine...
Also, brush up on your canine and human CPR, and basic first aid.
Human and canine first aid kit, with dressings, gloves, antibiotic cream, sterile saline. You can get all of this at the drugstore.
Radio with batteries.
Muzzles.
A full tank of gas.
And, most importantly, a deck of playing cards.
Will, I hope every thing is ok. My husband's family just evacuated the entire state for Frances, and I don't think they will be back until the threat of Ivan has passed. Good luck to you, and to every one down south...

I keep enough vetwrap around to make a cast. Only takes several rolls. I also keep a sheet with dog and cat CPR and heimlich instructions on the fridge. I need to get some epinephrine and write the dose that the dog and cat would need on the packaging. I need to order a 60cc syringe for wound washing too. Problem is that my family complains about the amount of medical supplies I keep just in case. Oh, I have a sheet of biodres too. That stuff is great for large open wounds (road burn, etc).

Muzzles
*Will smacks his forehead*
Good catch there, Melissa!
I have a question about the playing cards, though...was it hard to teach your dog to play poker?

No, they caught on to poker pretty quick, but paying up when they win is the tough part!

I used to lose to my dogs a lot and attributed it to their "poker face" till I learned... Watch the tail...

Also, be wary of any dog who can suck a sleeve to their ears- they can hide cards there as well.
I am still paying off my debt to them in small installments of raw chicken....

Will, Funny you should mention Hurricanes. Just finished a 14 day straight detail because of Frances. We put our working dogs in the holding cells at work and one of our recently retired handlers' dog was placed at the local greyhound park. The only thing I can think of adding to the already listed essentials would be to have the dog's crates/kennels clearly marked with a warning stating to keep all body parts clear or serious injury may result Glad Hurricane Ivan is moving away from us...I couldnt stand three in a row. Looks like you are in for a big blow though. Batten down the hatches!!
