I also e-mailed Ed to ask him this question, but the more input the better!
I re-measured my dog's nose this morning, and confirmed my belief that the wire muzzle I bought from Leerburg a few months ago is too big.
Her nose length is 3 1/4" and the exact circumference of her muzzle is 11". The muzzle I bought was the rottweiler muzzle I think. I've attached two pictures of her wearing it, but it's kind of hard to see how it fits. It's pretty loose, though, and I cannot tighten it around her neck enough to keep it on her head. It causes the forehead strap to go sideways, rather than straight over her head.
She is very dominant with other dogs, and does not hesitate to become aggressive with them if they are not submissive to her. She went after a leashed dog yesterday that was clearly not going to be submissive, and was trying her best to bite him in the ass. She kept running circles around him until I could catch her, hackles up all the way from her ears to her tail, lips curled and teeth bared. She clearly wanted to show him a thing or two. Even if she had been wearing the muzzle I have now at the beginning of the encounter, it would not still have been on her at the end - it's that loose.
I also wanted to ask whether you thought a basket muzzle or jafco muzzle would be best? She would be wearing it out on walks/hikes; pretty much any place we might encounter another dog. The jafco isn't as bulky, but the wire one would provide better breathability.

Jerked out of my hand. I wasn't holding onto it as well as I should have been. We don't normally encounter dogs at that particular place, so I didn't see the dog until she was after it. I use a traffic lead, so I wasn't able to grab it at first.
What made things worse was that the other dog started barking and going crazy just as Gypsy saw it, so it is possible that she perceived him to be a threat and that's why the leash was jerked out of my hand. Normally she doesn't just automatically go after the other dog; she normally postures first - raising her hackles and tail, and stiff walking.
But anyway, it happened, and I need to get a muzzle that 1)fits her, and 2)she can wear for long periods of time when we go for walks or hikes and still be able to pant and breathe. Ed said I could send mine back to get one that fits, but he didn't recommend which muzzle would be better.
