Being new to the breed and sport there is a lot to pick up on. I think its a good thing you are trying to learn before getting a schutzhund dog. Going to the club, watching training sessions and trials, talking to others is a good way to do this.
You'll find there are different opinions about working and show lines. Its personal preference. The working lines generally excel at schutzhund. Not saying a show line can't- just that the percentage is smaller and harder to find. When it comes to a working dog, you could walk on the field w/ a pink polka dotted dog and if it can really work- well everyone would respect that. The schutzhund trial doesn't give you points for how good looking the dog is, nor does a show ring give you points for how well your dog works.
The camp you seem to subscribe to would be those that favor the "Golden Middle", the best of both worlds. Its ellusive, but out there. Take the time to find out what you really want and compare that to what will actually fit your lifestyle and experience. Then start looking for a dog that fits into your life. Doing your research and going to a club is a good way to start. You don't need a dog to show up at a club.
Okay VC I'm happy your getting a chuckle out of this thread so I've decided to tell a joke to lighten things up.
Two Georgia football fans are sitting in the stands on game day, when one of the fellows looks down on the field only to see UGA the bulldog (mascot of the team) licking his privates. So the guy turns to his buddy and says "Boy I sure wish I could do that". His buddy in response says "That dog'll bite you".
