Judy, the only reason I started this thread was to re-post the CPR instructions!! I didn't mean to start the great debate. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
I have to throw into the pot the fact that less than 3 months ago, I lost my 13 year old Doberman due to him eating a rope toy. He was never even one tp play much with toys, much less eat one. He threw up one knot and a bunch of threads; the other knot lodged in his pyloris. Now all toys, balls, tugs, etc. are put away unless one of us is there to supervise.
Lynn, my last GSD loved tennis balls, but one day he tore one in half and swalled one half. I did not know he swalllowed it and within a couple days he was throwing up everything he ate. He had to get emergency surgery to remove the tennis ball from his intestine. I never give my dogs tennis balls anymore I use lacross balls, they are very hard, even the biggest chewers cant tear off big enough pieces to swallow, they bounce good, and only cost about $3 each.
A few of you mentioned tooth danger from tennis balls, and I believe that this is because of the glue that is used. It eats through the enamel on their teeth. Over time, it can cause serious tooth issues. Of course, like all things, moderation is the key. Keep them away from a dog who sits and chomps on the thing until it's soggy and broken, but for the dog who just retrieves them, they're probably ok. I just count myself lucky to have never had a dog eat anything non-edible.
I skimmed this thread- I have been warning dog trainers about tennis balls for 10 years - both on my site and in my training DVD's - it's a huge mistake to keep them around dogs. The glue used in tennis balls eats tooth enamle. Anyone who trains with them does so at their own risk.
My dog likes the Romp-N-Roll, but he LOVES his Orbee ball. I just ordered a second, not because his is broken or lost, but just in case, because I don't want to be without for even a day.
