So here is a question that fits in well with the youngsters thread. I am one of those young people, 23, who is high interested in getting envolved in dog sports and am nearing that point in my life where i will have the time that it takes to really focus on training. I was wondering what you guys would suggest for someone looking for their first dog. From what i have read, most good breeders would be extremly hesitant to giving one of their good dogs to a relative newbie. I have done mostly obedience work, but have never really dealt with any type of bit work. What type of dog should I be looking for and where should I look for them? I dont have any inflated opinions about myself, I know that I couldnt even begin to handle an extreme dog, but at the same time I dont want a dog that isnt worth the training. Just looking for some suggestions. Thanks.
Jake, If I were you I would visit as many clubs as you can talk to as many people as you can, you will never stop learning. If I were you I would maybe think about getting a dog that was not a real high drive dog,as they can be hard to handle. The pros on this board will have more opinions than I can even start to think of. listen to them they know what they are talking about. This is just a start........you will see.
I agree with Brandon. Best thing would be to visit and then maybe join a club in your area. That way you'd be able to gain alot of experience, see what you like (and maybe DON'T like), and be in a much better place when you do decide to get a dog. I'm betting that alot of the clubs would love to have help with the training or at trials so you can work/see a wide variety/type of dogs. Talk to the owners/handlers about the challenges involved with them. And I'm thinking you'll have alot more personal recommendations to breeders when you do want a pup, even if it is your first.
