I live in Beaumont Texas ( an hour and half east of Houston and 45 minutes west of the Louisiana border)and recently bought a German Shepherd from Wilhendorf kennels. Although I have bought several videos and books on training and have had a Shepherd before I would really like to get some personal guidance and feedback to make sure I do not screw anything up. The pup is only 10 weeks old. Accordingly, does anyone know of any good trainers down my way?
Trent,
Mike Russell, who is a member of this forum, should be able to help you. Think he is a member of Cypress Working Dog Assc. in LA. Look for some of his posts and there should be a link to contact him or click on his name and you can email him through the board.
Have you checked with Dena Mc Gowan, McGowan Veterinary Clinic in Vidor?
She trains with Greater Houston and my husband and I will be working with her mid week in Baytown.
I am basically looking for some advanced obedience training. I have small children 6 & 4 so first and foremost I want a great family dog who is great with kids.
I also go back to work at night downtown and I would like some minimal protection work and when I say minimal I mean like I give the dog a command and he barks at an approaching stranger. I figure if the guy is going to come through a barking Shepherd I am in serious trouble anyway.
But mostly I want to do things with the dog that he and the family will enjoy and will increase the bond between he and the family.
I will give Lt. Utley a call I remember her from my prosecuting days.
Trent, it's good to hear you found someone close you can work with. From you, we're just over 2hrs (when we train in the Lafayette area) or almost 3hrs (when we train in the Alexandria area)...we alternate back and forth every weekend.
