My 10 month old male gsd is has a habit that people tell me is normal for the breed. When I put him in a sit stay before going outside, or in the car or anywhere "fun" he really screams loud when I release him. I mean loud. I have to sneak his tug toy into my pocket because if he knows I have it he's even louder. I love his drive and exhuberance but I often play with my dogs at 4:30 am and he wakes up the house! I've tried putting a leash on him but it doesn't matter.
Ok easy enough, put him in a sit stay, give the release, you know he's going to wine so as soon as you release and he wines, give a sound correction and bring him immediately back into a sit stay. Do this until you can release him and he doesn't make a sound. Now I guessing he's been doing this for awile, so now it's learned behavior. So it's going to take longer than if you were starting from scratch. The key is you have to out last him when doing this execise, you can't give up and release him until he's quiet. i would also suggest teaching and working on a quiet command.
You're right, it is learned behavior. He does know the quiet command and can sit or down stay and behave. I'll try what you said, definately going to have to out last him. When he does it its one loud scream.
