I have to share as this was really amusing. My husband and I are in the middle of a remodel of our house and were finishing up one of the bedrooms. My daughter has a large mirror which was sitting on the floor when Heidi came in(she's just 5 months old) and saw "another" dog in the bedroom. She charged the mirror and started barking. She didn't back down when the "other" did the same and she just kept getting more excited until we pulled her out of the room. One of the kids let her in later and again she charged the mirror and barked only to stop and lay down to watch the "other" dog which also laid down. Obviously, Heidi has no understanding that it is herself she is looking at but I think she figured if she couldn't actually touch or smell the other dog there was no imediate danger. After a while she just ignored the other dog. Funny, Hairy, our other shepherd, who has never seen his reflection either didn't get all bent out of shape when he seen it. He just ignored it.
Kristina,
That is the funniest thing, ever! That made me laugh...my ribs hurt.
Heidi seems like a funny dog. Hay, at least she didn't let that other dog push her around.
I'd love to see a picture of her, send it PM if you can.
Anyway, I'm glad the "two" worked things out.

I just got around to reading this and laughed as well because my Corgi pup has done that to the mirrored closet doors in our home. He barks, he runs at the mirror, he tries to play with "the other dog" and he'll even walk away from the mirror and walk back to see if the dog is still there! My sons (24 & 26) think he's hilarious. I didn't know dogs could see their reflections. My mini-doxie never did this.

My first dog was a Shetland Sheepdog. As soon as she was tall enough to see her reflection in the oven window she was convinced there was another dog in the house, and would run from room to room jumping up to see the 'other dog' in all the mirrors.
I suspect she was either a)bored stiff and looking for something to do, or b)not playing with a full deck, but it kept her humans amused for 11 years!
