The last couple of days my dog has been making this sort of snorting/hacking sound. It isn't all the time but it happens at least 3-5 times a day. He hasn't had any bones, but we did adopt two cats from the local shelter. Could he have gotten Kennel cough from them, could he have a hairball? I did deworm him and it was all good, but I didn't deworm for tapeworms. Any ideas what this could be? I can't get him into the vet until next week-they don't it is anything serious...

Hi Dee Dee. I suspect this could be caused by the things you already mentioned. But in my experience, this sort of wheezing can also be a symptom of other problems as well. In particular, I have a dog with a seizure disorder (similar to epilepsy in people) and this sort of wheezing is a symptom according to our vet. The disorder can develop in dogs when they are young, or when they are older. While he still wheezes some, the more severe seizures are 100% controled with medication.
We have another dog who was recently diagnosed at 5 years old with a VERY slight heart murmer. Nothing that even needs medication at the moment. But once again that wheezing is a symptom according to our vet, and any noticeable increase in that is one of our "watch signs" for another vet visit.
So I would definitely check with your vet as it appears to me that this issue can possibly be a symptom of a number of different problems.
what about Parozysmal Respiration? Cause that is exactly what it sounds like-a reverse sneeze-not really a wheeze, or like when we sniffle only really hard. Keep the ideas coming though I don't want to leave any stone unturned regarding this. It isn't serious but it has me a little worried. And if it helps he is a 10 month old, intact male Papillion.
