Hi there, I am new to dog training and am just about to purchase a dog. I would like to know if it is too much to train in S&R, police protection, and Narcotics? it seems like alot to me and I would be worried that the dog could not handle all of it. My Department is in need of a good narcotics dog. I am interested in doing search and Rescue part time. and I think protection should be a must if you are working in law enforcement with a k-9 companion. Please give me some feedback on this because I do not want to purchase a dog and be unprepared when it comes to training.
If you had a great dog, the DOG could probably handle all of it... but you would most likely start to feel like you were in training 24/7 and that wouldn't be far from the truth. SAR requires a huge commitment of time (whoops, there go your weekends) and you can be deployed at a moment's notice--which could interfere with your job.
I'd just stick to patrol/narc training--that should keep you and your canine pal plenty busy for awhile. Then, if you get bored later on, join a Schutzhund club. You'll already have some good training foundation to build on.
Also--protection isn't a "must" for a narc dog and in fact some of them aren't cut out for it. Good dual-purpose police dogs are hard to find. The K-9 handlers on the board can tell you more about that...
I'm with Pete. SAR requires a huge time commitment in and of itself. You're looking at training with the dog 3 times a week, plus whatever training you would need to achieve a basic level of certification as a searcher. Some departments will not allow their employees to volunteer for SAR duty, as it *will* interfere with the job. If I were in your position, I would stick with what relates directly to your job. That will keep you busy enough!
sounds good to me....my department has really been needing a dog for narcotics since the last one retired; Search and Rescue was just something that I would do on my own free time. but hey, who has that much free time. and I would like to get your feedback on how well leerburg pups train in narc. Ive already just about made up my mind that I will buy from them. I just wanted opinions
Send Ed a private e-mail at frawley@leerburg.com. He can tell you how many dogs his kennel has put on the street as drug detection dogs. I'm sure it is quite a few.
hehe, I never really thought about asking him, after all he is the breeder and he has his own narc. dog..... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
