How do you go about getting your spouse on board with training, care and feeding of your potential competition/work dog. It's a daily occurance with me. we fuss less about raising our three kids than we do Maggie and Max. Diet is the worst issue. then it's "you're being mean for making them..." fill in the blank. Max is her furry boyfriend. I tried to tell her that they aren't born well behaved and trained. I'm planning on getting another GSD or Mal for competition and I don't want the training killed with her kindness.
Your thoughts and suggestions would be appriciated
Dennise - last week I finished editing a video titled How to Raise a Working Puppy - I dont have it on my web site yet - its 75 minutes long and only $30.00 (next catalog it will be more - when I started this I thought it would be a 30 minute video - well as most of my tapes go they grow in relation to how much I think about them.
With this said get it and put a shock collar on your wife and force her to watch it. It is going to answer all of the questions you brought up
oooops, hit the wrong button before I finished my post.....my dogs know the difference and react differently to commands given by me or my husband. They know they have to do what I say and sort of do what he says....right down to the way we enter doors. I go first, Winnie(Mal) is next, the schipperke runs through just ahead of my husband. What a pack order! But, it works for us!
I have asked my husband not to give Winnie commands that are used in work related training. Only things that apply to the house, such as.... go to your crate, go lay down, yours/mine, go potty...etc. We even use different commands for the same behavior and the dogs get it.
Good luck getting the rest of the family trained...it's easier to train the dogs!!!
Maybe Ed's next vid can be a kid's version <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Animal planet had a special of a thirteen year old girl raising a service dog, a Goldie of course. Lots of drama and tears, not too much details tho. If anybody can remember the title it would be appreciated
