HI I'm Robin and we have a beautiful 10 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback bitch who just got spayed and is doing great. She's all mom's girl and my son and husband do their best to be consistent and attempt to stick with the simple commands. When we brought her home at 8 weeks, whew is all I can say. Anyway, I made it through it and lived to tell about it. We were kind of thrown into getting her because originally (after a year wait) our breeder had promised a female and then when only two were born, we were told we weren't going to get one after all. Then a month later we were called to say another whorl showed up, so she was no longer show quality and would we take her. I was able to crash course read some Positive training books and get some idea of what to do...we observed a basic obedience class and she was able to have socialized time, went to lots of places and tried to expose her to 100 people within the first 90 days. We then did the basic obedience class as an actual student when she was 5 months old. It was all clicker training and we found implementing it very tough to see any real results or graduating. We finished there and went to another training class that had a trainer who had dealt with training lots of police dogs. We saw a lot more success and moved forward. Now here we are and wanting to move to the next level...how to make that stay mean something...how to make leave it really mean it (like when you're out on a walk and there's a bottle or can on the ground and who knows what is in it....how to make off (as in furniture or?) really mean it...how to get her to let us know when she has to go potty (we regularly take her out...because there have been a couple of times that she should have gone out and my son did not recognize her signs of pacing around the house looking for a proper place to pee as "I need to go outside to pee") Anyway, this is a much longer post than I thought. Thank you for indulging me and I'll be short and to the point next time. Just wanting to know how to make the basics stick, and move on to other stuff. Thanks
Robin, Check the archives. Everything you have mentioned has been covered before. If then, you have an un-answered question, Im sure the folks here will be glad to help you out.
Would it be possible to take advanced classes at the second place? It seems like you enjoyed it there and were successful, so maybe you can just continue. Just a thought.
