Dennis,
Brandi again...
Unless your dog has a medical problem with the anal glands, I'd leave them be. If, the only time he releases the glands is at the Vet, leave them be. My suggestion to you, is learn how to express them and ONLY do so, prior to going to the Vet. Don't do it on a routine basis as this will weaken the gland muscle and they won't express on their own.
My dog had allergy problems as would ALWAYS express them anytime his butt area touched the furniture, etc. It was GROSS! Then, he became depressed everytime this would happen as he thought he was going in the house. I had no choice but to have the Vet remove the glands.I wouldn't change my choice in for anything, but will say, it was NOT something I'd have my dog go thru again unless needed. It's also VERY important you have a Vet that's done this before and has cases of success before letting him/her do it. If the syphinctor muscle is slightly knicked, your dog will poop uncontrollable for the rest of his life...which means poop dropping all thru your house. After the syph. muscle is removed both are packed w/ gauze till the next day. It's then removed and can bleed for several days. I had to buy little boys pants for my dog as he was embarrased and leaked sometimes.
Hope this helps, Brandi
oh that wasn't the problem. he got stressed and scared at the vets and let loose. I tried to clean him up but the smell still lingers and I won't let him in the house for fear of funking up the furniture and carpet. I'm going to try some tomato juice.
Oh, ok...
There is a shampoo called Fresh N' Clean. It'll get out the smell for sure. You can also dilute pamolive dish soap. Unless a bath is given, the smell will not come out. Tomotoe juice...this doesn't even work on skunk smell...I wouldn't do it...IMO
Try using the shampoo, always worked for my anal gland dogs when I was a Groomer.

I know this may sound gross, but I read somewhere that Massengil (for women) will take skunk smell out better, so may work for cleaning up the smell. Good luck.
My groomer friend swears by hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to neutralize odors, and then a wash afterwards with dishsoap (I think she prefers Palmolive, too).
The hydrogen peroxide/baking soda mix definitely works on skunk. I know - especially at 11p.m. after a skunk encountered potty run.

Dennis my wife is a grooming Manager and we use an enzyme product-comes in a white gallon jug(forget the name right now) it kills the bacteria that cause the smell-works great on carpets, animals etc. On animals just wash off with water. It is sold at Petsmart-Petco, Valleyvet etc. Anal glands are an important part of a dogs natural function but expressing/cleaning them every 4-6 weeks or at normal grooming intervals is fine. Derek
