I have a three month old male Mal pup from OT Vitosha. Good dog, good drive, smart as a whip. Gets along well with my 3 1/2 year old female GSD. It has been established that I am the alpha male of the pack. The problem is this: very often when I pet him, or go to pick him up, or call him to me, and every time I scold him, he pees. Sometimes if I just look him in the eyes a little trickles out. The only discipline he has gotten so far is sharp "NO" and a little snap under the chin for peeing in the house. Now I've stopped that because it turned into a cycle: he'd pee in the house, I'd correct him, he'd pee some more....you get the idea. This never happened with my GSD.
So my question is 1. what am I doing wrong? 2. what do I need to do differntly? 3. is this completely normal for a Mal and he'll grow out of it?
Thanks
Correcting him for submission peeing was a mistake, but it sounds like you've stopped doing that, which is good.
Many of us have had the exact same problem with our dogs, they'll almost always grow out of it. To me it's normal for certain dogs, and as long as the dog is urinating normally elsewhere ( such as out in your yard ) , you can pretty much rule out a medical problem.
Be patient and avoid situations that trigger that response.
You might want to use the "search" function and review the old posts regarding submission peeing. Maybe when you see how many of us have owned "hoser's", you'll feel better about your pup! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Thanks Will,
I found your 2003 thread about Buttercup, and it made me feel a lot better. I like RVC's reasoning: the strong survive, and at three months old the strong try their best not to get KILLED! They do this by not offending the alpha males. It all works back into the pack mentality. Can anyone reccomend a good book about pack (wolf) mentality? I would think that this would be the clearest window into a working dogs mind.
