here is my 2 cents worth. i have owned a truely "hard" dog but my currant one is one of the "inbetween" ones not really hard not truely soft either. the softer dog is probly better from a training stand point cause you have to come up with ways to train that don't involve "pronging the dog to death <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> " ie you will not fix anything by useing force. i actually prefer my dogs right about in the middle hard enough to take a correction and a good one at that and yet soft enought that rank is not an issue.
also if you are like me and have a somewhat bad temper a little harder dog may be better for you.
Maybe is this untrue, but, I have noticed that the majority of Mals are hard dogs and the breed in general is not for the inexperienced owner. Gsds, on the other hand, seem to vary widely from soft to hard dogs depending on bloodlines. It might be safe to stick with a Gsd vs. a Mal for now.
