Ive been getting some good experiene decoying for my police department. I have been using a Ray Allen suit that they have provided for me. The suit Im using doesnt fit me exactly. I dont feel I have enough flexabliy. I was thinking of getting one that fits better. Could someone give some features I should look at or things I should stay away from. Brand names?
I would suggest getting a heavy "kimono" style jacket and competition pants. Most PSDs are trained for upper body bites. The competition pants will give you the flexibility to move around the field quicker. It sucks taking repeated upper arm bites in a suit that doesn't provide enough protection. Takes the fun out of it.
I agree with Scott. I help our K9 unit quite a bit also. We use a Ray Allen suit that is very bulky. Needless to say, it is just stand there and take bites, mainly to work on problem issues (outs, targeting, etc.) When we do scenarios, we usually use muzzles. It helps to avoid fixation on the suit. Also like Scott said, if you are really brave, most dogs: 1 are trained for upper body, and 2: will usually bite the suit if it is there because it is training material. I wouldn't bet on it, but you could probably just wear a jacket and no pants and still be safe. I'm attempting to try it, but they won't let me due to liability. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Jason, I took a nice full bite in the thigh not wearing pants. After that bite I slipped on the pants. The very next bite was in the crotch. I don't take bites without the proper protection anymore. By the way, both were dirty bites after the out so it surprised me. The dog wasn't trained for legs, he just liked to bite and needed more training.
I personally dislike Ray Allens suits for many of the above mentioned reasons. They are WAY too bulky for realistic movement. I also have seen WAY too many dogs break teeth on their synthetic material.
I just taught a decoy school for one of the US Army bases(MP's) and NYSP. No sooner did I complain about Ray Allen suits breaking teeth...bang, to NO fault of the dog or decoy did a dog snap a canine on the suit. We used my suits for the rest of the 3 days and not one incident.
I have NO $ gain by saying I personally wear and tell people about Roca Sport suits from Mexico of all places. I have owned just about every brand suit there is and this is all I now buy and recommend. The service is FAST (about 2 weeks delivered) and the prices are VERY fair.
If I'm not mistaken Roca suits are made in Mexico. That probably is why they are more affordable, no overseas travel expense and cheaper labor. I just bought a slightly used Eurojoe suit for $500. I haven't recieved it yet. I'll let you know how it feels.
It sucks when a dog looses a tooth like that. Especially when everyone is doing everything right.
