This post is meant as an encouragement to those who might want to try raising a puppy in an apartment. My wife and I have a 7 month old German Sheperd Dog (now 80 lbs!) and we live in a second-floor apartment. We did quite a bit of research and decided to commit to raising our dog. It has been a great experience and we have enjoyed having a dog in an apartment. The keys to our enjoyment are: 1) crate training the dog; 2) the ability to take the dog out at least 3 times a day on average; 3) exercising the puppy daily; 4) obedience training 5) having plenty of toys for the dog inside. We have had our puppy for 5 months and it has gone quite well. I would highly recommend Mr. Frawley's video on raising puppies as well as the book "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete. Discipline, love and consistency as well as initally selecting a puppy with a temperment suited to our lifestyle have been critical.
Although a nice big home with a huge fenced in yard is ideal, in the right hands, and with plenty of time and a place to excersise and train, sky is the limit.
Thank you sir. To follow up on your post, I have to agree that having an adequate place to exercise the dog is important. We walk our dog around the small town that we live in. Better yet, we take him to the football field that is behind the local middle school which also has a dirt track around it. It is well lighted at all times- a true blessing. When that is not available, we take him on short car rides to other atheletic fields- an experience which has helped him to get over some of his anxiety concerning riding in a vehicle.
agreed, I have two high energy pit bulls (6 & 1 year old), 60 and 40lbs. I live in a pretty small condo (smaller than my last two apartments) with a very small, unfenced yard. I would dare say that my dogs are happier, fitter and better behaved than a good deal of dogs from 'ideal' living arrangements. It takes a little more effort, but I wouldn't have dogs if I didn't want to spend a lot of time with them.
I recently moved into a house with a small yard. HOwever, I lived in a small two bedroom 800 sq ft four floor walkup apt in NYC with my SchIII GSD and pitbull mix and lets not forget the girlfriend for two years. Thank the lord for the bark collar and lots of early morning runs and early training.
This is why the dog treadmill I always thought was a good idea if the dog would use it. In an apartment or place like NYC if it worked out it would be priceless.
