I am writing to ask if anyone has any kind of departmental statistics on how many times a PSD engages a armed suspect in a typical serices lifetime. Also any statistics on how many K9 armed conflicts a department sees on average.
I am asking because I am curious (the general public only ever hears of the PSD deaths, but not about the day to day work a PSD is asked to do). But also because it has come up in conversation that PSD's are used for only known non-armed conflict or scent work. From what I have heard from friends that work with PSD or associated organization is that the PSD has a wide role within the police department and that a PSD is there to get the job done (armed or not).
The figure would have so many varibles from a statistical view point that an "average" likely won't have any meaning.
Obviously, a rural department with a lower surrounding ( and generally less violent ) population will give smaller figures. An inner-city urban area will show a trend towards a higher number of conflicts due to the type of population encountered.

Go to EuroK9.com and read about Stormfronts Brawnson, now deceased. It has the stats from his outstanding law enforcement career. I have a dog who worked patrol for 5 years and he is decorated but doesn't have that many arrests or bites but also he didn't get that many searches. Will is correct. I know k9s in smaller departments who just ride in the car for a week or better and do nothing. I also know big Metro K9's or Sheriff Dept. k9s who not only do their own work but also show up to help local PD's and State Police with searches etc who get several calls a shift. Derek
