Course Purpose:

To instruct police K-9 teams and their supervisors in the proper conduct of K-9 tactical search operations.

Course Overview:

Experienced professional instructors with hundreds of hours of practical street experience will be conducting this class. A PowerPoint presentation and guest speakers will be part of the classroom presentation. Numerous practical scenarios will be presented to challenge K-9 teams to their full potential. The course will be an excellent opportunity for K9 teams to learn new deployment techniques, develop new tactical skills and procedures, compare departmental polices and make new contacts.

Instructors:

Officer Dave Stambaugh:

Dave has been a police officer for 17 years and is a 16-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department. Dave spent the majority of his career working in South Central Los Angeles as a gang expert, as a member of 77th Division CRASH unit. Dave has spent the past seven years assigned to Metropolitan Division K9 Platoon. Dave also assisted in starting the department’s first tracking and trailing program. He is assigned two K9s, his patrol dog Caesar, a Belgian Malinois and his trailing dog, a German Shepard named Fulco. Stambaugh has been involved in several hundred K-9 deployments with the majority of them being high risk searches. He was recently promoted to an assistant Squad Leader and K9 trainer. Dave has logged hundreds of hours with the unit and has assisted in training numerous K9s for the LAPD. He is currently very active teaching within the department and outside of the department.

Officer Mike Goosby:

Mike is a fifteen year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department. During the course of his career, Mike has worked Juvenile Narcotics, Patrol, Vice, C.R.A.S.H. (gang unit), Community Relations (Senior Lead Officer), and Metropolitan Division. In April of 1997, Mike was selected to join the Metropolitan Division K9 Unit, and was promoted to Assistant Squad Leader/K9 Trainer in June of 2000. Mike's position requires him to provide K9 tactics training to all handlers that are assigned to the K9 Unit as well as other members of the LAPD. Mike, along with the other unit trainers is also responsible for the selection and training of all canines assigned to Unit handlers. Mike has participated in approximately 1200 actual K9 searches and was lead handler on over 600 of these deployments with approximately 300 suspects located. Mike's current canine is a 3 year old Belgian Malinois, named Luca. Mike has shared his expertise with numerous K9 Units throughout the United States.

Participant Eligibility:

Officers / Supervisors attending should be active Patrol K-9 Handler or Tactical Officers. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis for other law enforcement related fields and professionals.
