I have a great 4 month old Chesapeake Bay Retriever who pees (not poops) in her crate during the day and consumes the evidence. Is there any health risk with this and what can we do to stop it?
How long does he stay in his crate when he does this? Maybe he needs an extra break to urinate again before being put up? A 4month old med. breed dog can only hold it for 4-6 hours at a time & maybe overnight. Any longer without a break is too much to ask right now.
I don't know if it's bad to drink his urine. Probably won't kill him but can't be good for too long. I'd have a vet check him to make sure his doesn't have a UTI or kidney problems too.

She is in the crate for 3 hours at most during the day and then overnight. It's funny, because I'll clean the crate during the evening and there is no evidence whatsoever. I'm 99% positive she holds it all night. But during the day, she must think it to be normal to pee in the crate. She doesn't do it every day, but there are times when she does it. Am I giving too much water? Too little? The vet says the kidney problem is unlikely, since everything else is extremely healthy. I'm thinking it a phase, because the next trick is to teach her to bark on command, then bark when she needs to pee.
Try putting one of those tape recorders near her crate and when you leave record her sounds to see if she howls, barks, or whines excessively while you are gone. If she is anxious while you are gone, she will whine for more than 30min. and this anxiety may cause her to urinate and drinking it could be another nervous behavior. Though it's unlikely that a dog this young would show signs of seperation anxiety, it is a possibility. Or if there is an activity outside your house that she can hear, but you didn't know occurred while you were gone, this could cause her enough anxiety or excitement to bark and eventually urinate in her crate.
Might find some interesting things on the tape when you play it back...on the fast speed of course.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Would I find subliminal messages, ala Judas Priest? "Twice as much food, and I like T-Bones, not chicken back."
My wife is home all day, and I work from home. I'll start a log, because it's too vague right now. It doesn't seem like she's done it in the last few days. No strong smell from the crate or smudges of dirt on the floor.
