Can someone tell me what products are good out there for bad breath and home dental care, and if there are any I should stay away from.
I read about something called Oxyfresh on the internet- is this product any good?
I don't know much about extensive dog care, we have always just gone to the vet before and since finding this site, I am learning that there is a lot more to dog care than many vets tell us or perhaps are aware of.
Thank you for any suggestions,
Carolmartine
Save your money on the fancy garbage that doesn't work <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />, instead, go the the grocery store and pick up some pigs knuckles, and large beef shin bones. Give it about 2 to 3 weeks and the teeth should clean up nicely.
However, if the dog has really funky breath, I'd take him/her to the vet for a mouth/health check just to be on the safe side. Also take a look at what your feeding the dog, cheap kibble is one of the biggest reasons for nasty breath. If you can't feed a raw diet (always best) then go for the highest quality dry food you can get.
Thank you Laura,
We have an appointment at the vet this evening- perhaps they will say teeth cleaning. She is an old (at least 12, we are not sure) little terrier mix. Within the last few days her breath started smelling like excrement from a sick dog. If a little of her saliva gets on a piece of clothing it smells so horrible we have to change right away. She is tiny and old and has difficulty keeping warm- in the 40s today and she shivered after being out so badly we wrapped her up and cuddled her until she stopped.

Poor thing. She may have some abscesses that are unknown to you. Does she eat well? She also may have a blockage. Some of our elderly patients get blockages, and well they puke up stool. Yeah, gross huh? I know abscesses can give awful bad breath as they are just leaking infection and broken down tissue (decomposition). Well good lck on your vet visit.
Thank you for the advice, Pippy should have dental cleaning next Friday, her heart and lungs checked out well, and as long as her blood work comes out ok, she can have the procedure. The vet wants her to start antibiotics 5 days before the apt. and said this may help the odor a little. She said that clients have told her mouth rinses with chlorophyl help a bit also, but she doesn't know what makes them work. I will post results of all in a week or so.
