I have a sorta silly question, I have two German Shepherds...one male one female...she is due to have pups in about nine days, my question is will my male hurt the pups? they are his pups, All females I have been around after having pups the males were nowhere to be seen so this is a concern to me, as I would hate to have to keep him kenneled for the next 8 weeks til we give the pups away... Thank in advance
I've never known a male to hurt a litter, whether they were his or not, but that's partly because the mother dog won't let them near anyway. But personally I wouldn't risk it. Can't you just keep him out of the room?
I too have never seen a male go after a litter his or not, because mom has always been their to defend them. I would just keep them seperated and not learn the hardway.

Dana-it really matters on the male dog, pratice caution first. It makes no difference whether or not your dog is the father of the pups or not...he doesn't know the difference. I have a 7 yera old male here who is a very valuable tool in socializing the puppies we have. Although we don't start the puppies with him until they are weaned. We kind od let him take over as the adult k9 figure in their lives after they are away from Mom. Derek

I know nothing about breeding, but I remember seeing a post on this site a few months back from a woman who left the gate to her pups pen open and they were killed by their father???
I am sure there are plenty of expereinced breeders on this site that should be able to answer your question.
I'd have to go with Derek on this. I had a 9yr old GSDxDane that neverfathered a litter, yet would throw up to feed a pup. My JRT, that has fathered a litter, would have killed them in a heartbeat.
I have the male Kenneled, i let him out daily of course, i just wanted to find out if he would possibly hurt the pups, he is very territorial, but only in the back yard, I know my famale would probably tear him a new one if he so much as came around them but i wanted to ask someone who knows alot more than I on the subject. When he is out ill shut the door to the building they ar ein, but this cant be done once the pups are romping around the back yard. Guess its a he will learn or ill teach him the hard way matter.
Thank Much for all input
