My 6 month old, male, GSD puppy, who has no problems in his crate at night, hates it when we leave during the day. He'll scream and bark for 20-30 minutes when we leave, and will destroy anything left in the crate. When we leave, we usually leave a nylabone or Kong for him.
Unfortunately today, I forgot to leave anything in the crate with him (bad me) and he decided to chew a patch of hair from his tail. A small patch, is now 1/2 it's normal length. I heard (from an unreliable source) that the hair on a GSDs tail will not regrow. Is this true? I wanted enter him in a confirmation show. Will this affect his showing?
His tail hair will regrow but it will take about 2-3 months. My gsd got bit on his tail by a fire ant and chewed the hair off the tip becuase it itched so bad. It didn't start growing back for about a month and then it took two months for it to completely look normal again. It looked horrrible when it was bald!
The crate issue seems like a bad problem. If a dog crys for 20-30 min. when you leave and now is to the point of self-destruction that is considered a seperation anxiety problem. Make his crate his "happy home" and feed him in there, give him treats for going in, and randomly throughout the day place him in his crate for short or long periods of time. Only let him out when he is not crying and give him plenty of non-destructable toys (like a kong). You don't want the crate to be a predictbale, consistent place he goes everytime you leave. That makes him anxious and destructive. When you come home, do not instantly let him out and m,ake a big deal about seeing him. Baby talk, attention, and excitement right when you arrive only reinforce his thinking that it was a horrible thing that you were gone and the crate was punishing. Calmly let him out with no emotion and ignore him until he settles down. Then you can give some normal attention and petting when he's calm. This should help his problem.
Good Luck with his tail too! I put moisturizer on it to get it to soften and grow faster. Maybe it helped?!
