I have a 19 mos old male GSD. I felt his obedience although correct was slow and not enthusiastic. I have the Drive, focus and grip video along with the Balabanov obedience without conflict and wanted to use drive to speed response and enthusiasm.
It works very well, his speed in response to commands is great and his focus and enthusiasm for the ball or tug is great. Ears forward and excited.
My problem is that fairly regularly he will do the wrong command. If I say sit, he could down. Sometimes he will run through the whole sit, down, heel. Basically he just looks so excited he can't concentrate on what I say.
How do I handle this. When he does the wrong command what should my reaction be. Any advice would be appreciated since the training is giving me exactly what I want but I must have missed a step somewhere.
He is trying so that is a good sign. Try working on less commands in one session. I know that when I was teaching my dog the change of positions for ring that I could have said peas carrots corn and he would of changed positions for each one. Dogs learn situations and patterns first, so he doesn't really know the commands. He isn't wrong here. I like to break them up for a while, ie down one session sit the next ect.ect. I always know i am on the right track when they try something. Its when they stop trying that you fouled something up good. ( sad but i have done that as well )
Say no then repeat command. I am not so good at explaining this. Ivan Balibanov has tapes "obedience without conflict" that are better at explaining this. I am better at showing than talking and even worse at typing.LOL I would recommend getting those tapes I believe that system is very good. If you get a chance to go to a Micheal Ellis seminar he is doing the same kind of training. I have taught my dog the defense of handler, search and bark, escort, heel, down, sit, stand,so far without using a correction collar just using NO and starting over. I don't mind using corrections but this method is doing really well by me.
