can someone give me an idea what they mean by correction level? IE "...I would use a level one correction" or "I used a level three correction." The best I can figure is a level 1 is a short sharp "NO" and a level 10 is the dog is in fear for its life.
Nothing in paticular at this time. Max will get a quick pop on the lead for getting distracted. Maggie(90Lb GSD) got a by the neck shaking for bolting out the gate when she knows better.
You have to be able to read the dog you are training, and first determine is the dog in drive and then what level drive the dog is in at that moment, then with that information think back to is my dog hard, medium, or handler sensitive. What you are asking is far to difficult to explain without anyone seeing your dog work, or you seeing it explained by an experienced trainer with his dog and various other dogs, because rarely are two just alike. I believe Ed discusses this and demonstrates this in one of his videos, I can't remember which one, maybe someone else can shed light on that.
If I could read a dog I'd be writing books on the subject. Maggie and Max are the first dogs I've attempted to really train. I'm getting a GSD pup from working lines. I should have it wired tight by then
Like they said, it's still up to you because you're the one who can see your dogs and hence the only one capable of deciding what's the best correction for them. It's really not rocket science. I don't even know the term 'levels of correction', and I've still done fine so far for the last eight years.
a correction is what it takes to interupt the behavior the dog is doing. doesnt have to be with a collar(voice) at the low end or could be with a boot to the butt (high end). what works is an experiment with each dog.
